OVERVIEW
Marine litter is one of the biggest environmental issues today, with negative impact on marine ecosystems and coastal regions economy. It consists of materials produced, processed and used by humans, deliberately or accidentally discarded or lost in the aquatic environment (eg, sea, rivers or beaches). According to some estimates, about 80% of marine litter is the result of land-based activities. Although this environmental risk is recognized, its impact on ecosystems is still poorly understood.
Promoted by IPMA, GIDLAM project aims to create a data management platform for processing and making available the marine litter data collected on the Portuguese coast to support the implementation of the Marine Strategy Framework Directive (DQEM-D10).
CEiiA is responsible for the data management system development.
