COP21 IN PARIS: PROMOTING SUSTAINABLE MOBILITY

CEiiA was present at the COP21, the Climate Conference in Paris, presenting to Ban Ki-Moon, Secretary General of the United Nations, mobi.me, the first smart management system for urban mobility that measures CO2 emissions in real-time.

The importance of emission monitoring

The participation in COP21 places Portuguese technology at the forefront of sustainable mobility. This participation was particularly relevant given that the final agreement between the parties establishes the need for countries to regularly submit plans for emission reduction (developed countries should do it every 5 years) and the need to monitor their progress. Mobi.me, which monitors the emissions associated with mobility, has reinforced its role in promoting sustainability.

mobi.me introduced to Ban Ki-moon and John Kerry

CEiiA participated in two parallel initiatives in COP21 co-organized by the United Nations and addressed to the private sector, the "Caring for Climate" and the "Sustainable Innovation Forum".

In Caring for Climate, CEiiA had the opportunity to present mobi.me to the UN Secretary-General Ban Ki-moon and to the US Secretary of State John Kerry.

In the "Sustainable Innovation Forum", CEiiA participated in the panel "Sustainable Cities: Increasing Efficiency and Transforming Design" and had a showroom which was visited by several entities, including Achim Steiner, Executive Director of the United Nations Environment Programme.

Mobi.me had already been considered a reference at the UN COP20 in Lima, Peru. As a result of the participation in COP20, mobi.me achieved increased visibility and it manages, since mid-2015, the electric vehicle fleet of UN Brazil in Brasilia.

CEiiA had already been awarded as one of the best cloud services in Europe by Eurocloud.

ADDITIONAL INFORMATION

About mobi.me

Mobi.me is the first smart urban mobility management system for urban mobility in the world that measures CO2 emissions in real-time.

Mobi.me is an open platform that integrates the services offered by various mobility operators of a city (public transport, car or bike sharing, charging electric vehicles, etc.). This solution overcomes the current fragmentation, as in every city there are several separate services, which work independently of each other, hindering a smarter and more sustainable mobility.

Mobi.me allows a Mobility as Service approach, and therefore each person can choose, in real-time, the best option to move from A to B considering the associated emissions, but also variables such as time and cost of each of the available alternatives.

Each person can then decide if it´s more convenient to move by car or to combine the use of the underground with a shared bike, and can still make other decisions, such as adding travel insurance or delay travelling for a moment outside the rush hour with the possibility of paying less, as an example.

Mobility services, provided by multiple operators, may be charged at the end of the month within an integrated invoice through an app. Coins for the parking meter, the car identifier or the underground pass are having their last days.

Why is the monitoring of the ecological footprint relevant?

Currently, people are unaware of their ecological footprint, so this is not a factor they take into account in their mobility decisions. The accounting of emissions in real-time using mobi.me has several advantages.

  • It allows users to make their mobility decisions considering, in addition to the time and cost of travel, their emissions, increasing the awareness of their mobility impact.

  • It allows cities to monitor their emissions and hence define policies to reduce them.

  • It allows mobility operators to set rates related with CO2 emissions, rewarding sustainable behaviours.

About COP21

The COP, or Conference of Parties, encompasses 195 countries in ratifying the United Nations Framework Convention on Climate Change. The COP21, held in Paris, reached on the 12th of December 2015 an agreement to limit global warming to a maximum of 2 degrees Celsius. The COP21 was a fundamental moment to define urgent and global measures and to align the strategies of governments, companies, the civil society and the media in an effort to accelerate the path to a low-carbon future. It represented one of the largest conferences on climate ever held.

About Sustainable Innovation Forum

The "Sustainable Innovation Forum" (SIF) was the biggest event within the private sector taking place during the COP21. It brought together 750 delegates of the public and the private sectors from all around the world to promote partnerships to accelerate the development of low-carbon solutions. The SIF was held on the 7th and 8th of December at the Stade de France in Paris, being organized by the Climate Action and UNEP, and supported by the host country and organizer of COP21, France. The agenda of SIF15 reflected the latest trends in innovation in the low carbon area and covered topics such as markets and carbon pricing, urban mobility, sustainable management of the landscape, the circular economy and innovation for business competitiveness.

About Caring for Climate

The Caring for Climate was launched by the UN Secretary-General Ban Ki-moon, in 2007. The initiative is coordinated by the United Nations Global Compact, the Secretariat of the United Nations Framework Convention on Climate Change (UNFCCC) and the United Nations Environment Programme (UNEP). The Caring for Climate intends to mobilize a critical mass of business leaders for the implementation of solutions and to advise climate change policies. The initiative helps companies to propose practical solutions, share experiences, support the definition of public policies and change public attitudes.
