OVERVIEW

The oceans, seas and coastal areas, providing many assets fundamental to human well-being, will continue to make an invaluable contribution to the security and satisfaction of food needs, improved nutrition and poverty alleviation of a growing world population as well as for the generation of economic growth.

Fisheries and aquaculture of fish and aquatic plants constitute a fundamental component of this contribution, and the evolution of these two sectors in the last decades has highlighted the growing importance of aquaculture, observing that, worldwide, human consumption of fish from aquaculture already exceeds consumption from captured fish.

CEiiA is part of a international consortium that is currently developing a pilot project targeting underwater aquaculture in the Atlantic coast aiming at evaluate the feasibility of a new offshore production concept, from the definition of the necessary requirements to equipment deployment. Besides the technology, the case will address environment and biological conditions.
